Christ University Institue Of Management Batch 2010: Is my age right for an MBA?

Christ University Institue Of Management Batch 2010: Is my age right for an MBA?: There is no right or wrong age for education and the same applies to an MBA as well. What matters more is what your objective is?  What are ...

JOB

A word that has lots of meaning for an individual who has just completed his bachelor’s or master degree. Every individual being on college while completing his/her educational dreams of being hired by some reputed company and post which he would settle in his life and become self-dependent.

However, for all individuals things are not same, what a person may think or desires may not always be as per his thinking or desires, if anything happens so, no individual would be sad and everyone would be happy.

People have different thoughts about their job, for me JOB is an abbreviation, which means “JUST ON BOARD.” Like a sailor of a ship, I also landed on a ship of my destiny and now it’s time for me to perform my role and move ahead with the waves. Waves which may be quite, rigorous or harsh, just like your life, but one always needs to move ahead.

After joining, I met my team, just like a crew of a ship, everyone with his own role. Some people call it a team, gang, or unit but whatever you may call, these are just not words and they stand for lots of things, a new sailor joins in as a part of unit, then he works with other members as a team and finally develops a bond, which he calls his gang.

A new sailor joins in with lots of opportunities and constraints, both in different capacities. I felt something which most new joiners’ feels, at times what you think as an opportunity turns out to be a constraint. for example, when you land on board, you understand thinks how other people are doing and your develop ideas that these things can be performed in a more easier manner, and its your opportunity to show your potential, but one advice, being a new joiner we have this attitude of jumping to the decisions, please beware!!!!

In addition, especially if you are not the only new joiner, then you always find that other who joined with you also have similar ideas, and they also want to showcase themselves. However, if you were the only one, then you would find that there are already some big shots sailing with you to break your myth. Finally, you are thought process starts having a shift from changing things to becoming big shots and enquiring about them how they have achieved a dictating position on your ship.

I also had some mixed feelings when I landed on my ship, but not exactly what I have mentioned above.

So finally it was my first day on board, our supervisor introduced us to other members, who will be now my team members.

After landing on my ship, I was informed about my life’s first corporate term, "Honeymoon Period". This sound bit exotic, is not you crazy minds, but it’s definitely not. It’s just you are new joiner, just like as people feed there goats before Id, you just need to come to office, relax, check out what we actually do and what you need to do once your so called honeymoon period finishes, though every company may not give you this honey moon period, but some give that too just because they need to complete some formalities like creating your system ids, access cards etc.

For the people who are yet to join, it’s an opportunity to check out hot chicks in the office, but wait! don't just get excited, after hearing about chicks, because there is always a possibility that your office may doesn't have any, and only available once are the egg laying hens, or on a contrary it may happen that the hottest chick in your office may be your immediate supervisor.

So finally, you are left with no other option "Poor guys! I pity on you...!" However, just do not forget, it is your new day, new job so take a chill-pill, it is a long way to go...And please do enjoy life as you are JUST ON BOARD.

Why We Shout In Anger

A Hindu saint who was visiting river Ganges to take ba...th found a group of family members on the banks, shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his disciples smiled and asked.

'Why do people shout in anger shout at each other?'

Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, 'Because we lose our calm, we shout.'

'But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner.' asked the saint

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the other disciples.
Finally the saint explained, .

'When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other to cover that great distance.

What happens when two people fall in love? They don't shout at each other but talk softly, Because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is either nonexistent or very small...'

The saint continued, 'When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that's all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.'

He looked at his disciples and said.

'So when you argue do not let your hearts get distant, Do not say words that distance each other more, Or else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.'

CRIPPLED

I woke up 7 in the morning. There was a time in life when I used to sleep for 12 hours a day in my mom's lap. But I couldn't understand whether time has changed or its me who have metamorphosed. I put my foot in my slippers, I felt some numbness in my foot. It was common for me to have some night cramps in my leg, and wake up with some numbness. But this was different. It was much more intense.

I tried to walk but my legs were weak. Almost an hour had passed since I woke up but still my legs weren't working. I called my best friend to help me get up.
"You don't eat properly. Take some milk in the morning and eat properly. Nothing will happen to you." He said. 'How can less eating can cause numbness' I thought. Many people fast for long periods they don't get such weakness. I had to finally visit the worst possible place- HOSPITAL.

I met Dr. Kumar one of the best neuro doctor. The board read MBBS,MD,DNB and some degrees starting with F. How can somebody be so studious. It seems that the person never came second in life. Crap! I hated such guys.

"You are suffering from a syndrome known as GB syndrome" he said. Sounded like a short name for a disease. Maybe it was just a small error in something. "It is curable but you need some courage and motivation to recover. Its also possible that you may never walk again." he said with ease.
I couldn't react for few minutes. My mind was not responding. I should be sad but I was not. Maybe I didn't believe this genius.

Months passed away. I was now used to the injections and bottles and all the crappy ill-tasting medicines which they gave. I was given a wheel chair as a gift. Nice and handy for a crappy little crippled like me. Suddenly I hated the world, I hated the jokes, I hated everybody- friends and family everybody.
I was 'walking' in my wheel chair. I saw some children playing. I wanted to play now. I wanted to walk, run, jump and dance. Why me? What wrong did I do? I hated the world even more. There was no god. There was no good. I felt only hatred.

A guy passed along. He was on his fours but was able to walk faster than me. It seems like he was suffering from Polio. His legs didn't work permanently I guess.
I called him "Bhaiya ! What do you do for living?"
"I am the senior cashier in SBI." He said with a smile.
"How do you cope up with this disability. And how can you still smile?" I asked
"I smile with my lips and work with my mind. You are not handicapped until your mind works properly. And about my waling style. I feel I am normal and the whole world is walking abnormally."

I smiled and he walked away in his pace. It didn't matter whether I recovered or not. It didn't matter whether I was happy or not. Only one question popped inside me ' Who was more crippled me or him'

Governmental Mahabharat !

A hilarious account of what happens in this country!

A Team comprising of a Writer, a Producer, a Director, etc applied to the Government of India for financial assistance with the script to produce a Movie on Mahabharata.

All of them committed suicide later and the reason will be very obvious once you have read the reply from Govt.

Dated ............ .........

Subject: Mahabharata

To: The Writer, Film Director & Film Producer, Mumbai

Ref: Film story submitted by you, regarding financing of films by Government of India , Your letter dt. ............ . ......... .

The undersigned is directed to refer the above letter and state that the Government has examined your proposal for financing a film called ''Mahabharat' . The Very High Level Committee constituted for this purpose has been in consultation with the Human Rights Commission, National Commission for Women and Labour Commission, in addition to various Ministries and State Governments and have formed definitive opinions about the script. Their observations are as below:

1. In the script submitted by you it is shown that there were two sets of cousins, namely, the Kauravas, numbering one hundred, and the Pandavas, numbering five. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has pointed out that these numbers are high, well above the norm prescribed for families by them It is brought to your kind attention that when the Government is spending huge amounts for promoting family planning, this will send wrong signals to the public. Therefore, it is recommended that there may be only three Kauravas and one Pandava.

2. The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has raised an issue whether it is suitable to depict kings and emperors in this democratic age. Therefore, it is suggested that the Kauravas may be depicted as Honourable Members of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and the Pandava maybe depicted as Honourable Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha). The ending of the film shows the victory of the said Pandavas over the said Kauravas. The ending may be suitably modified so that neither of the Honourable Members of Parliament are shown as being inferior to the other.

3. The Ministry of Science and Technology has observed that the manner of birth of Kauravas is suggestive of human cloning, a technology banned in India . This may be changed to normal birth.

4. The National Commission for Women has objected that the father of Pandavas, one Sri Pandu is depicted as bigamous, and also there is only one wife for the Pandavas in common. Therefore suitable changes maybe made in the said script so that the said Sri Pandu is not depicted as bigamous. However, with the reduction in number of Pandavas as suggested above, the issue of polyandry can be addressed without further trouble.

5. The Commission for the Physically Challenged has observed that the portrayal of the visually impaired character 'Dhritharastra' is derogatory. Therefore the said character may not be shown as visually impaired.

6. The Department of Women and Child Development have highlighted that the public disrobing of one female character called 'Draupadi' is objectionable and derogatory to women in general. Further the Home Ministry anticipates that depiction of such scenes may create law and order problem and at the same time invite strong protests from the different women forums. Such scenes may also invite penal action under SITA (Suppression of Immoral Traffic Act), therefore they may be avoided and deleted from the film.

7. It is felt that showing the Pandava and the Kauravas as gamblers will be anti-social and counter-productive as it might encourage gambling. Therefore, the said Pandava and Kauravas may be shown to have engaged in horse racing. (Hon. Supreme Court has held horse racing not to be gambling)

8. The Pandavas are shown as working in the King Virat's employment without receiving any salary. According to the Human Rights Commission, this amounts to bonded labour and may attract provisions of The Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976. This may be corrected at once.

9. In the ensuing war, one character by name Sri Abhimanyu has been shown as fighting. The National Labour Commission has observed that, war being a hazardous industry, and the said character being 16 years old, this depiction will be construed as a case of child labour. Also there is no record of his being paid any compensation. This may also be deemed to be violatory of the provisions of The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 and Minimum Wages Act, 1948. Such references in the film may be removed.

10. The character 'Sri Krishna' has been depicted as wearing a peacock feather. The peacock is our National Bird and wearing dresses made from peacock feather is an offence under the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972. This may not be depicted.

11. Smt Maneka Gandhi has raised very serious objection for using any elephants or horses in war scenes, since there is every scope for mistreatment and injury to the said animals. The provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1890 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Amendment) Act, 1960 would be applicable in the instant case. Suitable changes may be made in the script to address the objections raised.

12. In pursuance of the Memorandum of Ministry of Finance regarding austerity measures, it is informed that in the battle field sequences, only ten soldiers may be allowed for each side. Also, all the characters may be shown to have obtained a valid licence under the Arms Act, 1959 as well as the Indian Arms Act, 1878.You are therefore requested to modify the script along the lines indicated above and resubmit it to the undersigned at the earliest for reconsideration.

Websites to find Internship opportunities in India

Most of my Juniors are worried about their internship, which is required to be completed by them as per their course curriculum. The major disadvantage is often faced by the people who, opt for the specialization other than Marketing, because very less companies visit the campus, for the role of a intern, for specialization other than finance.

The reason behind is very simple....

For the people opting marketing, any company is ready to take them, as the company just want them to do sales of its products and services. But for the people of other specialization, its very difficult to get a good project during the internship.

I am writing below about some of the ways to seek internship, hope would be useful for the readers....

Below are some of the websites, which turns out to be useful for seeking the internship opportunities.

Twenty19.com:

Twenty19  offers students and companies a platform to connect for internships and projects. This website also provides information on a plethora of opportunities that students can take part in to gain practical exposure and enhance their profile. The portal is absolutely free of cost for the students as well as colleges. Twenty19 has a range of student opportunities like internships, projects , tech-fests, scholarships, business plan contests, cultural and symposiums, conferences, volunteering opportunities, summer internships etc.

Letmeknow.in:

If you want to know about all the scholarship you can apply too,or college and their fest or competition and contest you can take part in or fellowship or workshop, here is a portal which will help you.Let Me Know covers latest internships, scholarships, competitions, conferences and events in the fields of business, technology, entrepreneurship, arts, culture and social innovation

Indianinternship.com:

This website provides internship details for MBA Internship, BE / BTech Internships, MCA Internship, Graduates Internships, Summer Internships, This portal offer free registration and contain thousands of internship opportunities to choose from .

Hellointern.com:

HelloIntern ,launched by some IIT Bombay folks in year 2006, this website helps interns find the right apprenticeship opportunities with companies. The portal provides information about internships at various location in India and also shows the stipend offered.

10internship.in :

This is another website which has thousands of internship opportunities from various sectors like engineering, management, medicine etc.Although it is not so famous among students and designing is also not attractive but it is worth giving a shot when you are desperately looking for some internship opportunity in India because many times there are internships that you won't find anywhere else.

In my next post, I would also tell what you should seek as a project in a company and how to go for it.

Difference among CV, Resume and Bio Data

Often I had a doubt about what is a difference between CV, Resume and Biodata. On a broader note I know the difference between Biodata and Resume, but CV and Resume was difficult.

Finally I got to know the difference among three and I am sharing the same with you all.

Difference among CV, Resume and Bio Data

People use the words RESUME, C.V., and BIO-DATA interchangeably for the document highlighting skills, education, and experience that a candidate submits when applying for a job. On the surface level, all the three mean the same. However, there are intricate differences.

RESUME
Resume is a French word meaning "summary", and true to the word meaning, signifies a summary of one's employment, education, and other skills, used in applying for a new position. A resume seldom exceeds one side of an A4 sheet, and at the most two sides. They do not list out all the education and qualifications, but only highlight specific skills customized to target the job profile in question.

A resume is usually broken into bullets and written in the third person to appear objective and formal. A good resume starts with a brief Summary of Qualifications, followed by Areas of Strength or Industry Expertise in keywords, followed by Professional Experience in reverse chronological order. Focus is on the most recent experiences, and prior experiences summarized. The content aims at providing the reader a balance of responsibilities and accomplishments for each position. After Work experience come Professional Affiliations, Computer Skills, and Education.

C.V CURRICULUM VITAE
C.V is a Latin word meaning "course of life". Curriculum Vitae (C.V.) is therefore a regular or particular course of study pertaining to education and life. A CV is more detailed than a resume, usually 2 to 3 pages, but can run even longer as per the requirement. A CV generally lists out every skills, jobs, degrees, and professional affiliations the applicant has acquired, usually in chronological order. A CV displays general talent rather than specific skills for any specific positions.

BIO DATA
Bio Data the short form for Biographical Data, is the old-fashioned terminology for Resume or C.V. The emphasis in a bio data is on personal particulars like date of birth, religion, sex, race, nationality, residence, martial status, and the like. Next comes a chronological listing of education and experience. The things normally found in a resume, that is specific skills for the job in question comes last, and are seldom included. Bio-data also includes applications made in specified formats as required by the company.

A resume is ideally suited when applying for middle and senior level positions, where experience and specific skills rather than education is important. A C.V., on the other hand is the preferred option for fresh graduates, people looking for a career change, and those applying for academic positions. The term bio-data is mostly used in India while applying to government jobs, or when applying for research grants and other situations where one has to submit descriptive essays.

Resumes present a summary of highlights and allow the prospective employer to scan through the document visually or electronically, to see if your skills match their available positions. A good resume can do that very effectively, while a C.V. cannot. A bio-data could still perform this role, especially if the format happens to be the one recommended by the employer. Personal information such as age, sex, religion and others, and hobbies are never mentioned in a resume. Many people include such particulars in the C.V. However, this is neither required nor considered in the US market. A Bio-data, on the other hand always include such personal particulars.

How to Crack Interviews...

1. Tell me about yourself
The most often asked question in interviews. You need to have a short statement prepared in your mind. Be careful that it does not sound rehearsed. Limit it to work-related items unless instructed otherwise. Talk about things you have done and jobs you have held that relate to the position you are interviewing for. Start with the item farthest back and work up to the present.

2. Why did you leave your last job?
Stay positive regardless of the circumstances. Never refer to a major problem with management and never speak ill of supervisors, co-workers or the organization. I f you do, you will be the one looking bad. Keep smiling and talk about leaving for a positive reason such as an opportunity, a chance to do something special or other forward-looking reasons.

3. What experience do you have in this field?
Speak about specifics that relate to the position you are applying for. If you do not have specific experience, get as close as you can.

4. Do you consider yourself successful?
You should always answer yes and briefly explain why. A good explanation is that you have set goals, and you have met some and are on track to achieve the others.

5. What do co-workers say about you?
Be prepared with a quote or two from co-workers. Either a specific statement or a paraphrase will work. Jill Clark, a co-worker at Smith Company, always said I was the hardest workers she had ever known. It is as powerful as Jill having said it at the interview herself.

6. What do you know about this organization?
This question is one reason to do some research on the organization before the interview. Find out where they have been and where they are going. What are the current issues and who are the major players?

7. What have you done to improve your knowledge in the last year ?
Try to include improvement activities that relate to the job. A wide variety of activities can be mentioned as positive self-improvement. Have some good ones handy to mention.

8. Are you applying for other jobs?
Be honest but do not spend a lot of time in this area. Keep the focus on this job and what you can do for this organization. Anything else is a distraction.

9. Why do you want to work for this organization?
This may take some thought and certainly, should be based on the research you have done on the organization. Sincerity is extremely important here and will easily be used. Relate it to your longterm career goals.

10. Do you know anyone who works for us?
Be aware of the policy on relatives working for the organization. This can affect your answer even though they asked about friends not relatives. Be careful to mention a friend only if they are well thought of.

11. What kind of salary do you need?
A loaded question. A nasty little game that you will probably lose if you answer first. So, do not answer it. Instead, say something like, that,s a tough question. Can you tell me the range for this position? In most cases, the interviewer, taken off guard, will tell you. If not, say that it can depend.

12. Are you a team player?
You are, of course, a team player. Be sure to have examples ready. Specifics that show you often perform for the good of the team rather than for yourself is good evidence of your team attitude. Do not brag; just say it in a matter-of-fact tone? This is a key point.

13. How long would you expect to work for us if hired?
Specifics here are not good. Something like this should work: I,d like it to be a long time. Or As long as we both feel I,m doing a good job.

14. Have you ever had to fire anyone? How did you feel about that?
This is serious. Do not make light of it or in any way seem like you like to fire people. At the same time, you will do it when it is the right thing to do. When it comes to the organization versus the individual who has created a harmful situation, you will protect the organization. Remember firing is not the same as layoff or reduction in force.

15. What is your philosophy towards work?
The interviewer is not looking for a long or flowery dissertation here. Do you have strong feelings that the job gets done? Yes. That,s the type of answer were that works best here. Short and positive, showing a benefit to the organization.

16. If you had enough money to retire right now, would you?
Answer yes if you would. But since you need to work, this is the type of work you prefer. Do not say yes if you do not mean it.

17. Have you ever been asked to leave a position?
If you have not, say no. If you have, be honest, brief and avoid saying negative things about the people or organization involved.

18. Explain how you would be an asset to this organization?
You should be anxious for this question. It gives you a chance to highlight your best points as they relate to the position being discussed. Give a little advance thought to this relationship.

19. Why should we hire you?
Point out how your assets meet what the organization needs. Do not mention any other candidates to make a comparison.

20. Tell me about a suggestion you have made?
Have a good one ready. Be sure and use a suggestion that was accepted and was then considered successful. One related to the type of work applied for is a real plus.

The Get Lucky List

It is middle of the night as am writing this. I was just reading an old book (Liberation Management, pages 612–614) on my shelf that had this chapter on luck. It just fired my imagination and I just had to put my adapted version of this down.

Luck does play a big part in success. If you at times find yourself throwing your hands up in the air in despair, try a few of these strategies to get lucky.

If you are the planning types and believe meticulous and orderly plans are the only way forward and luck is just a by product, then by all means keep at it...

Have a little fun. Get lucky. Try these strategies..

  1.  Chop off the cribbing. Get on with something.
  2.  Shoot it. Don’t just keep aiming.
  3.  Fire one in the dark. you never know.
  4.  “If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.”—G.K. Chesterton
  5.  Just Start.
  6.  Read. Read. Read.
  7.  Where you will be same time next year hugely depends on what you read and who you met.
  8.  Read stuff not just bestsellers. Got to think differently.
  9.  Travel. Visit new places. Insights guaranteed.
  10.  Just don’t drink yourself nuts when you travel. Then insights guaranteed.
  11.  Reinvent old hobbies. Photography. Gardening. Sports. Whatever. Do.
  12.  Take up a sport. Have some fun.
  13.  Work with weird people.
  14.  Ask really dumb questions. “How come a CD can only take about 20 songs?” Somebody asked that stupid question and came up with an iPod.
  15.  Failure is good. Its indicates that you stretch. Pursue a few failures of the past. Give it one more try. Just one. Do it in the craziest way you can think of. Go nuts.
  16.  Have a ‘different day’ tomorrow. Do everything that you normally do differently. That will get you thinking.
  17.  Listen to everyone today. Get ideas through questions.
  18.  Don’t listen to anyone today. Just do what your gut says at supersonic mad speed.
  19.  Get fired. Maybe the best that will happen to you.
  20.  Don’t hang out with people who think they are unlucky. It rubs off.
  21.  Hang out with crazy people.
  22.  No idea ever came from a plan. It just came. Free up your mind. Get intuitive. How?
  23.  Delegate everything on your plate.
  24.  Delegate more. Have time.
  25.  Destroy protocol.Challenge your boss on something. Be intelligent. Have an outcome in mind. GOOOOOOOO.
  26.  Take a risk. Go take someone from another function for lunch. Enjoy.
