Choosing the MBA Specialization

I am in a deli ma and some of my friends are also in a deli ma about which specialization we should choose, I tried to search out for this answer and finally I got this which I think can help some of us

Solve this puzzle. How to choose your specialization?

Heres your answer: Marketing is for those who can talk well. Finance is for those who are good with numbers. Operations are for those (who are good with numbers plus) with a manufacturing background. HR is for those who can handle the touchy feely stuff - or those who are bad at maths or non engineers, if you want to be politically incorrect. There is always MBA in IT that is available for those who came from an IT background or those who want to go to an IT company. End of puzzle.

That is the common street talk on the specializations on the MBA circuit. Add minors and majors to the mix and you can think of yourself as a person who has a major ability to talk well and a minor interest in IT, therefore you pick up a Marketing - IT combo. Now, if you can see for yourself how absurd this is, you will know what I am driving at.

What is important to remember is that none of the specializations are mutually exclusive in real life. Which is obvious, considering business is not meant to be mutually exclusive. Anything and everything in an organization and real life is interconnected.

Second, as a human being, who has cleared various tests and reached the doors of the MBA, your ability to learn and pick up any specialization is also a given. Which means, if it was about passing exams and gaining a specialization, you can clear an MBA with flying colours in any specialization. Don't agree. If could you could do so in graduation, why not in post grad?

And then, there are trends. Or call them fads. Organizations see demand going up or down for certain specializations depending on what state of the business cycle they are in, the economy (of their target market) is in. If you wish to cash in on that, don't. Trends will come and go, but both your passion and your qualification will remain.

So, how does one approach specializations?

Many years ago, at an interview for one of Indias most recognized automobile companies, was a line up of eager students, including me. One of us walked out post interview and as it happens, we were eager to know what did they ask him. He said, much to our surprise, 'they asked me about the fielding positions in cricket and I was able to do it instantly'. Instantly, one of the students in the room drew up a sheet of paper, grabbed a friend and having jotted down the positions, started memorizing the fielding positions in cricket. After all that appeared to be the trend. What he did not realize was that the company was basically looking for the level of passion of the engineer when they asked him what his favourite sport was. (Needless to say the guy who drew the cricket fielding positions made it.)

Very often we tend to approach specializations in the same way.

Heres one example. Let us say that you are a Chartered Accountant. So, your grounding in accounts is impeccable. From here, can you become an IT requirements consultant in Finance? Check. Can you move onto marketing financial services or working with potential overseas investors? Check. Can you handle operations in a BPO or a Bank with an added MBA degree? Check Or you are deeply passionate about HR? Check.

Replace CA with any other degree and you will find that it is almost impossible to justify why anybody with any qualification should or should not take up a particular specialization.

Heres a thumb rule. Remember, that the MBA is an addition to your 15 or 16 plus years of what you have already done. So, if you are an engineer or an economics student, the MBA is just the icing on the cake - the cake is what you already have - the sum total of your studies and your experience. Now take a second look at those specializations. And then take a long hard look at your interest and strengths. What do you like to do will answer the former while what you are good at will answer the latter. A combination of these three should ideally lead you to the specializations. If you are in doubt or in a fantasy about the nature of jobs after acquiring the said specialization, please meet a few people who are in the kind of job you long to do and ask them exactly what they do. Beyond jargon, beyond the gloss, beyond the job description, ask them what is the exact work that they do and if that interests you.

So, once again, think about why are you in the race for an MBA. At the end of the MBA what would you want to become and why? It is important to like what you are into, regardless of what your friends are into. It is equally important to be good at your job. By no means does that mean that you can be ignorant of other specializations. And as you work in organizations, you will realize that many are.

So, if you are in for a regular specialization, it is self evident. (If it is not, talk to people you have worked with or know you well or with a professional counsellor - they will help you.) If you have the choice of two, use that choice wisely. Just taking the hottest two together may not be the best message you convey to a potential recruiter - it will not help you masquerade as "either". Think Icing, think Cake.

Now, for the second part of an often asked question. Does it matter?

The answer is a tough one, though I would take a stand here that does not really matter in the long run. Heres why.

Once you enter into a company, the only thing that matters is performance. So, if you a finance specialist, if you perform you get to move higher. If you don't, the person who does, gets to move higher. As you gain in the years, it is important that you broaden your perspective as you go along. And what that means, knowing how the different parts of the business interplay and ensure success. Strategy means holding the different levers like the reins in a chariot so that your business runs smoothly in the right direction. Is that possible for a one trick pony? No.

Heres an exercise. Take a look at a sample size of CEOs (or whatever else is your goal) across industries. Find out what their education/specializations are. Do you see a correlation? Then, into this mix, ensure that you include a mix of large corporates, SMEs, neighbourhood businesses, start-ups in it. See that data again.

My bet is that there will be no correlation (indeed there will not even be a correlation of basic qualification or MBA or anything else).

And if there is, you know which specialization to take...

Story of appreciation...

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.

He passed the first interview, the director did the last interview, made the last decision.

The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not  score.

The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" the youth answered "none".

The director asked, " Was it your father who paid for your school fees?" The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.

The director asked, " Where did your mother work?" The youth answered, "My mother worked as clothes cleaner. The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.

The director asked, " Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?" The youth answered, "Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.

The director said, "I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother's hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.*

The youth felt that his chance of  landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.

The youth cleaned his mother's hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water.

This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother's hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future.

After finishing the cleaning of his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.

That night, mother and son talked for  a very long time.

Next morning, the youth went to the director's office.

The Director noticed the tears in the youth's eyes, asked: " Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?"

The youth answered, " I cleaned my mother's hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes'

The Director asked, " please tell me your feelings."

The youth said, Number 1, I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, there would not the successful me today.*

*Number 2, by working together and helping my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done.*

*Number 3, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship.

The director said, " This is what I am looking for to be my manager. I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of others to get things done,  and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired.

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company's performance improved tremendously.

A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop entitlement mentality" and would always put himself first. He would be ignorant of his parent's efforts. When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others. For this kind of people, who may be good academically, may be successful for a while, but eventually would not feel sense of achievement.

He will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more.

Experience the difficulty and learn the ability to work with others to get things done.

Bak-Bak...

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.
           (Hardly seems worth it.)

If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.
(Now that's more like it !)

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.
       (O.M.G.!)

A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes.
(In my next life, I want to be a pig..)
A cockroach will live nine days without its head  before it starves to death.    (Creepy.)<>

(I'm still not over the pig.)
Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour
(Don't try this at home, maybe at work)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off.
(Honey, I'm home. What the...?)

The flea can jump 350 times its body length.. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field.
(30 minutes. Lucky pig! Can you imagine?)

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.
(What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)
Some lions mate over 50 times a day.
(I still want to be a pig in my next life...quality over quantity)

Butterflies taste with their feet.
(Something I always wanted to know.)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.
            (Hmmmmmm.... ..)

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people.
(If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump.
(Okay, so that would be a good thing)

A cat's urine glows under a black light.
(I wonder who was paid to figure that out)

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.
(I know some people like that.)

Starfish have no brains
(I know some people like that too.)
Polar bears are left-handed.
(If they switch, they'll live a lot longer)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.
(What about that pig??)

(and God  love that pig!)

Smoking - A trail, a pleasure, a habit....

When I was a child it was the time when I use to saw people smoking around me and use to hate them and make a perception that he was a bad man.... Sitting at my shop when my shop helpers use to go inside the godaam (Warehouse) use to take a puff of smoke and when I use to see them I use to complain my father and uncles that "chacha aandar bidi pi rahe the" (uncle was smoking bidi inside and they use to scold them and we use to feel that we did something good and now they will not do it again and it is injurious to health....

Time passed away and we turned out to be young then we use to see our so called "friends" smoking here and there and when they use to do so, we use to scold them and say "beta sudhar jaoo... bahut kharab chiij hai ye...." (my dear avoid it, its  bad for health).

then time came when we entered into a level know as maturity (Age after passing 12th class). we went out of our towns to other places working for our entrance exams to get admissions to some colleges or some courses. When we use to leave our houses...Parents just to say "Beta kisi galat aadat mein mat padna" (Son, don't get engage in some bad habits...) which directly meant smoking and drinking and we use to say with full of confidence "papa hum aapka bharosa nahi todenge..." (father we won't be unfaithful to your faith).

When I went out of my home we use to write what our expenses we use to make during the day in our dairies. I still remember one of my friend who use to do the same thing as we use to do...but their was a difference we use to write those expenses which we use to make but in his dairy he use to write 1 glass milk in morning Rs.10/-, 1 glass juice in evening Rs.15/-, again 1 glass milk in night Rs.10/-... and things use to go on everyday.

One day I asked him out of my curiosity, why do you write these things when you never used them. He said you all write your dairy for whom, I said "no one, I just want to make a record that I am not overspending" he said "I use to write a dairy, as my father had asked me, to show what were your expenses during your stay." and then I asked him "why these expenses??" He said "I love to smoke and I can't show it in my record, so these expenses use to fill the gap".

I was shocked to hear this and told him, you are not a human... how could you cheat a your own father?? And my perception for this person totally changed. And we started to make rumors about him in our friend circle and everywhere...use to ignore him.

A Trail
It was my last day and next night we were supposed to travel back to our places. In the other town, we use to live in a private hostel and we were three people in one room. One of them was my friend I told you about and one was another guy for some other place he was 3 years senior to me and he was preparing for different course and he was also a smoker.

Living together for 6 months I shared a awesome bond of friendship with him.On the night prior to my return it was around 10:30 pm we were just sitting and chatting, suddenly I asked him how did he started smoking... and he told his story.

Then I told him being in this town I didn't do anything wrong but I have a urge about smoking and I don't know whether I would get any companion like you in future I would like to smoke a cigarette. He was having one cigarette and told me he want it for night but if I want he can get me from nearby bus stand which used to be open for 24 hours.first I thought to give it up.... but later on I don't know what came into my mind and I agreed to him and asked to get one for me.

My one was a single cigarette but he interpreted as one pack of cigarette and he brought it. On seeing a pack I told him I don't want a pack and I don't want to smoke, you keep the pack with yourself and enjoy it. He said okay to it.But was trying to convince me to have one.  Later on around 12:05 AM he again offered me and I again said no to him. then he said " Abbey ek se thodi na tu mar jayega.... Aur itni kyon faata raha hai". (Hey why are you getting scared nothing will happen with one...And you won't die)

And I some how took my first trail to cigarette... After two puffs... I was going for third...
And then he commented "Are you not feeling to cough?"
I said "no, I don't"
he said "I found very less people, who didn't use to cough while trying for first time"
And his comment made me reach on cloud nine....
And that whole night I had my trails after trails... up to 7:00 am in the morning.

This was my first trail to smoking world....But inside my heart I felt a guilt, I had cheated my parents.

All the smokers and non-smokers(Whom I admire a lot..) Be regular on my blog to read more in coming days....

With a guilt in my heart

India Housewives... the Best Managers Ever..!!

When I woke up in the morning, I was amazed to see the marathon my mom was doing around the house .. helping my brother to find his socks, preparing lunch box for him, then preparing breakfast for my dad, along with washing clothes, attending the maid, preparing my lunch, and sipping her already cold tea in the intervals she gets .... oohh..I can't even describe them all..!

How she manages to do so much things at the same time?
Well I think... this is called Truly Multi-Tasking....!!
           HATS OFF for you MOM..!!

This is just not the case of my house, it is the same scenario in almost every Indian family early in the morning. Can there be any better example of an efficient manager than Indian housewives..??

Well.. as far I can think of.... a big NO..!!

If you still have any doubt...lets analyse..on the basis of skills expected from a perfect manager..!
Starting with PLANNING.... for this..just an example..INDIAN WEDDINGS..! Do I need to say anything more??
I think the picture that just crafted in your mind explains itself. She can be seen running around directing everyone, guiding all, helping & instructingall the workers, relatives, attending guests .. along with the most important thing.. money management..!

Then talking about ORGANIZING ... when you find yourself helpless in finding any thing important which you kept somewhere & don't remember at all.. whom you run for in the moment of crisis..?
YES, of course..your mom... 'coz she knows where exactly to look for it. Isn't that great organizing skills she possess without any training or classes.

Am I forgetting LEADERSHIP.... naah..!!
An Indian housewife is perfect example of that.. Imagine you lost your cricket match & your team blames you for that & you are depressed, not talking to anyone, didn't eat also anything when back to home.. and told to family members that you are tired & so retiring to sleep.
Then there is a knock at your door, your mom enters with a plate of food , she sits by your side & asks you only one question.... Will not eating food help in winning the match next time?

And you broke down in her lap filled with tears..what she does next?
She consoles you & helps you in regaining the lost confidence, boosts up your moral .. Isn't that what a leader is expected to do in a team..EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION..!!

Talking about DECISION MAKING..!! Well we all believe and say.. one should always listen to his mother & wife...'coz the woman instinct is never wrong... at least most of the times it's correct..!! Their prudence vision helps them take the best decision for their family because of the love & concern they have in their heart.
They do NOT need any INCENTIVES or BONUSES or PERKS..

The smile & happiness of their family is their biggest incentive & source of motivation.
They do NOT need any ORGANIZATION GOAL to stick to it.. 'coz they know well what is their goal in life.. success of their kids & prosperity of the family.

She is always keen on learning new things & keeps herself updated.. so that she can help her daughter select the latest dress and accessories & look trendy and cool ..... so that she can bring latest gadget for her son.. so that she can help her husband in solving problems & certain issues.

Ever wondered how well they manage the finances; the employees as well as the customers .. both the family member & a bunch of relatives depending on situations.. the smooth functioning operations..everything..!

You might be wondering why I named the title as "INDIAN"Housewives specifically.. 'coz India is a country where we still believe in family and culture; and all this comes under the duty of the mother to inculcate culture & respect for the nation & elders in her children and turn them into nation's asset. We are still high in our COLLECTIVIST nature and value families & society more than individual self.
And they never went to any B-School or attended any Management class.. still they are the BEST MANAGER .. and we can learn a lot from them..!!

A TRIBUTE TO ALL INDIAN WOMEN..!!
                                              WE SALUTE YOU ALL ..!!
